I also posted this on GSN's forum, but wanted the feedback of Family Feud Forum members:
While remembering when I first got GAME SHOW NETWORK in early 2000, I was reflecting on how much great classic programming was shown on the network...then I thought of how different “GSN” looks now, in terms of its program schedule & overall “feel” of the network.
I know many factors have changed over the last 10 years…management, more owners, leasing fees for Sony programs, etc.
Through it all, GSN seems to continue to spend a decent bit of change on their “original” programming over the last couple of years…Baggage, Catch 21, Chain Reaction, 20Q, Bingo America, Late Night Liars, The Newlywed Game, Instant Recall, etc.
Obviously, with the exception of “Lingo”, it appears most GSN original programming has a very short lifespan, in terms of how long new production lasts…though some original program reruns seem to last ridiculously long on-air.
Without knowing specifics, even if anyone can provide reasonable speculation, how much money do you think GSN spends on original programming in a year or two-year period? Now, how much do you think GSN spends on the classic programming it currently airs (Family Feud, Pyramid, Card Sharks, Match Game)?
Do you think that GSN’s spending on short-lived original programming is justified, in relation to what it has on its programming schedule? Is it more cost-effective to spend money on production of 4 or 5 shows of original programming (from the ground-up) than it is to lease more classic programming (i.e. Wheel of Fortune or…gasp, the Goodson-Todman library)?
Personally, I feel as though if GSN has the money to throw at all of the short-lived original shows produced over the past 3 – 4 years, maybe their efforts & money would’ve been better served to get behind 1 or 2 really reputable shows to produce LONG-TERM and use the excess money towards more classic programming. What do you think?
