I liked Richard Karn in "Home Improvement," and he was an okay enough host on the Feud. But I didn't like it when he'd go " I'll double the points," as opposed to " We'll double the points." I suppose that was just his style, since he also did something like that when he hosted Bingo America, but it bugged me; it came across like he had the authority to bend the rules if he felt like it. "I know your family won the game, but I think the other family is more deserving, so I'm going to let them play Fast Money instead of you."

Not only that, but whenever he said "I'll triple the points!!" he always followed that up with "However, I'm only going to read this question once, so (insert names of the two family members in the fifth position on both sides), pay attention in case I come to you." That gave the feeling that the game always had to be rushed during the fourth round.

"I'm only going to read this question once" doesn't bother me as much, because it adds an exciting "sudden death" element of immediacy to the gameplay.
Besides, "I'm only going to read this question once" was an actual action that Karn could take, whereas with "I'll double the points," it was the producers who were really making the decision to double the points in that round, and in that context Karn was just the producers' mouthpiece.

Haha, shea6408, very good (and hilarious) post! You are certainly right. When Richard used "I" instead of "we", it was as if he had sole ownership over gameplay. At the same time, I would suspect he would do that to further 'personalize' the contestant experience. Certainly, "we" would have been a bit more appropriate, in my opinion.

Dawson even did I'm only going to read this once too.
Combs said "we're going to pick up the pace"
as for I'm doubling or tripling, just don't sound over exaggerated just because a team has a goose egg or the shaking of hands

All I can say is that Karn had a strong voice for the role, but it can be annoying. Then again, he was a great host.
